The history of The Herb Chambers Companies dates back to 1985, and we owe our success to our owner, the celebrated Dorchester entrepreneur and U.S. Navy Veteran, Herb Chambers. Prior to entering the auto industry, Herb founded A-Copy America in 1965. A-Copy America went on to become the largest independent office equipment dealer in the United States. He sold that company in 1983, to Alco Office Products known today as Ikon Office Solutions, a worldwide company. The company grew to become the largest copier dealer group in the world. He wanted to pursue a new venture and established what is considered one of the largest privately owned automobile dealership groups in the country today.
Herb Chambers purchased his first automobile dealership in New London, Connecticut in 1985. His vision was to provide a better experience for his clients. That vision became the foundation for The Herb Chambers Companies. At that time there were 31,000 automobile dealers in the United States and Herb Chambers became 31,001. His approach was so effective, his business quickly rose up the ranks and is now among the top leaders in the American market of authorized dealerships. Over the years through consolidation and mergers the total number of dealers has decreased nationally. An impressive 60 dealerships and 3 collision centers make up The Herb Chambers Companies, which is ranked 20 out of the 17,000 remaining automobile dealership groups.
A commitment to exceptional customer service is what continues to drive The Herb Chambers Companies. In fact, Herb Chambers has said that his business' achievements are the result of his own experiences, both good and bad. Understanding the consumer's mindset continues to provide him the knowledge necessary to offer the highest level of service to his clients.
