Since January 2009, Linda A. Carlisle has served as Secretary of the N. C.
Department of Cultural Resources under Governor Beverly Perdue. Prior to her appointment, Linda was a corporate and banking executive, entrepreneur and active community volunteer. Early in her professional career, she served in a broad range of executive positions with, now, Bank of America.
In 1979, she began her own company along with her husband and together, they grew the company, with offices in central and western North Carolina. After selling the business in 1989, she continued to serve as President of the wholly-owned subsidiary of the Fortune 200 Company until her retirement in 1997. After retirement, she expanded her roles and focus on community, educational and political interests.
Carlisle has been extensively involved in leadership roles in the for-profit and non-profit sectors, providing leadership, strategic planning, financial expertise and key resource development. Her work includes service on a number of community Boards, statewide Commissions, University Boards of Trustees, a wide range of fundraising leadership roles, a founding board member of a new community bank, and service in a number of key advisory roles for businesses and political leaders.
In January 2012,  Carlisle was named to the U.S. Travel and Tourism Advisory Board, which advises the U.S. Secretary of Commerce on matters pertaining to the vital U.S. tourism industry.
During her tenure leading the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources, her key focus has been on expanding the understanding of the Creative Economy’s impact and contribution to the state’s economic environment. Her “Creativity Means Business” message has been credited with a higher profile of the creative assets of the state and a broader appreciation of their role in creating a dynamic environment for economic development. Secretary Carlisle works on the local, state, and national level to communicate the positive impact of Cultural Resources to attract and retain jobs, enhance the education of children and life-long learners, and grow stronger communities. She received a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and a Master’s of Business Administration degree from Wake Forest University.
